HOW AYAHUASCA AFFECTS THE BRAIN #shorts

HOW AYAHUASCA AFFECTS THE BRAIN

How does ayahuasca affect the human brain?

Ayahuasca is an ancient Amazonian psychedelic brew used by indegenous communities for 1000s of years.

The ayahuasca brew is usually comprised of two compounds: The acacia plant which contains DMT, and the Ayahuasca vine which contains an MAOI.

DMT is usually orally non-active due to the enzymes in the gut, the MAO Inhibitor allows the DMT to be absorbed.

Ayahuasca typically lasts between 4-6 hours.

Ayahuasca affects areas of the brain involved in feelings, memories, vision, and consciousness allowed for amplified introspection and problem-solving related to past and current life stressors.

Ayahuasca tends to increases openness and optimism. Studies show reduced activity in parts of the brain associated with depression and anxiety.

Both DMT and ayahuasca can temporarily raise heart rate and increase blood pressure. Most users experience what is often described as a purging, which manifests as potentially intense vomiting and diarrhea.

Ayahuasca is considered a powerful psychedelic.  Potentially negative effects include anxiety and fear are associated with the hallucinations.

“From the altered brain waves and participants’ reports, it’s clear these people are completely immersed in their experience. It’s like daydreaming, only far more vivid and immersive. It’s like dreaming but with your eyes open,” said lead author Christopher Timmermann, a PhD candidate in neuropsychopharmacology at Imperial College London.
