Last year I grew a sweet pea arch and it was one of my favourite parts of the garden. This year I have 3 arches to play with!
I sow the bulk of my seeds in October, with a few late sown here or there (cause I can never stop buying seeds!) then I’m planning to do a second bulk batch this weekend.
I grow them on in pots (in the greenhouse) till it’s warmer outside, last year is was mid April. I then planted them out either side of the arch, 6 each side (3 in front and 3 behind the arch sides).
This was just enough as I kid you not, they grow like crazy and quickly take over!! I zigzagged wire up my arch and just bent the sweet peas in as they grew for support.
With sweet peas the more you cut, the more you grow! Last year I had so many bouquets of sweet peas, I couldn’t give them away fast enough!
I feed occasionally with multi purpose feed and remember to cut the tendrils that form as they will grab onto nearby sweet pea blooms and distort them!
I also choose to pinch my sweet peas when they’re young as it helps to branch them out and you get more blooms. You don’t have to, they’ll grow longer and taller if you don’t (which you may prefer) ☺️
Are you growing a sweet pea arch this year? 🌸
