X-Men: Apocalypse is the sequel to X-Men: Days of Future Past and the ninth installment in the X-Men film series. Directed by Bryan Singer, the film is set in 1983, dealing with En Sabah Nur, an Ancient Egyptian mutant who awakens from millennia of slumber to take over the world and wrest control of the planet from humans. The film was released worldwide on May 27, 2016, to mostly mixed reviews, with the story and characters being given negative criticism.

Following the critically acclaimed global smash hit X-Men: Days of Future Past, director Bryan Singer returns with X-Men: Apocalypse. Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshipped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel's X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto, to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven with the help of Professor X must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.[1]

In 3600 B.C., an aged En Sabah Nur is about to undergo a transference into a younger, regenerating mutant's body inside a technologically-advanced pyramid that works off of sunlight. However, some of his followers betray him and attempt to destroy the pyramid. Apocalypse's Four Horsemen defend the god-like mutant, and just as the transference completes, the pyramid collapses. En Sabah Nur is still alive, but trapped in a comatose state due to the transference process being interrupted, as the young mutant's body transforms into a younger version of himself. The opening credits roll, acting as a transition between Ancient Egypt and 1983.

Apocalypse (born En Sabah Nur) was an immensely powerful and ancient mutant. He was believed to be the very first mutant and the ancestor of all mutant-kind, having survived for several millennia. Apocalypse, known to others by his birth name "En Sabah Nur", was born in 8000 B.C. and is the firstborn of the mutant race, as he rules the world in Akkaba of prehistoric Egypt.

According to Moira, wherever Apocalypse was, he always had four primary followers that he would bestow powers to and wherever he ruled, it would eventually end in a cataclysm or an apocalypse of some sort. Throughout his reign, it is implied he helped civilizations grow and when they became too populated, he would destroy them to clear the way for a new civilization.

In 1983, Moira MacTaggert arrives in Cairo, Egypt and witnesses a group of occult followers chanting for En Sabah Nur to awaken. En Sabah Nur has finally awakened after so many years. While exploring the modern-day world, he meets a street thief named Ororo Munroe, who is being threatened by a man who she recently stole from, and intervenes by killing off the other men who chased her and literally melted the man into a wall. He later goes to her house and uses her television to 'learn', and is disgusted by the way the world has become and comes to the conclusion that mankind had lost its way through years of conflict and disasters by their leaders. He decides to change the world and recreate it in his own image by letting the strongest mutants and himself rule. By starting to do so, he begins recruiting his Four Horsemen. He increases Storm's powers, causing her to have white hair and making her his first Horsemen, Famine.

In prehistoric Egypt, a young En Sabah Nur is seen in using his powers to construct a pyramid while a vast crowd of people bow before him, chanting his name while his Horsemen look on. While performing a transferal of his essence into a new mutant's body, one with instantaneous healing, his worshipers betray him and set forth the destruction of his pyramid. The Four Horsemen ensure Apocalypse still survives the ordeal even as the monument is collapsed, killing the followers while keeping En Sabah Nur entombed for millennia.

In 1983, a teacher starts talking about the 1973 incident and how mutants were finally revealed and how Erik Lenhsherr attacked the president of the United States at the lawn of the White House.
