July spots are still available for the Chromeworks Digital Learning Studio, a groundbreaking new tech camp concept premiering this summer at RA.
Code video games in Scratch, build a Lego stop-motion masterpiece, or film an epic space voyage on our green screen! Your imagination is the only limit in this full-day technology camp, led by rising YouTube star and veteran technology teacher Andrew Tomec. Chromeworks camps boast a cutting-edge 21st Century learning model where small teams or individuals are set free to work on their own creative projects in a supportive environment.
Students in need of skills or inspiration will be able to join in on optional mini-lessons that build practical skills in coding and digital media creation, but self-starters will be encouraged to jump right in and use our studio’s resources to start building. Campers will be provided with a personal Chromebook to work with for the week, with access to cloud-based coding and multimedia tools which they’ll be able to continue using at home and school for years to come. They’ll have access to the Chromeworks Studio’s lighting, green screen and a huge collection of Lego and other stop-motion props. Student work will be showcased on a camp website which will feature an individual web page for every participant. Our camps are ASD and ADHD friendly, and Mr. T’s learning model has been designed from the ground up to appeal to exceptional children.
Lead instructor Andrew Tomec is a former journalist, veteran elementary school educator and lifelong computer geek who has taught coding and multimedia skills to more than 3,000 Ottawa students and countless young viewers around the world. His Chromeworks learning initiative, started in 2016, draws inspiration from educational innovators all over the world who are pushing back against rigid curriculum and time-allocation models in favor of a more open-ended, project-based approach that reignites kids’ innate love of learning and exploration. At the outset of the pandemic, he started his own YouTube channel teaching FREE online coding classes to children everywhere. Since then, Chromeworks has amassed almost 300,000 views and attracted kids from around the globe. His channel was named, alongside the BBC, as a leading provider of cutting-edge e-learning resources, and his groundbreaking work was featured in a recent cover story in Professionally Speaking, the official magazine of the Ontario College of Teachers.
