It’s Coming: NASA’s Shocking Revelation About the “Expanding Cosmic Rift”

It took astronomers a long time to realize this motion was happening. To recognize that we were moving, scientists first needed to map the regions of space around us. And while humanity has been mapping the stars since ancient times, it wasn’t until Mr. Hubble in 1924 proved that stars existed in other galaxies beyond the Milky Way. Before that, although astronomers saw fuzzy clusters of light in the sky—what we now know are galaxies—the common belief was they were gas-cloud “spiral nebulae” within the Milky Way, not objects beyond it.

Hubble observed several Cepheid stars—a type of variable star with a cycle of brightness changes closely tied to their luminosity—inside one of these spiral nebulae. Using this predictable relationship between luminosity and distance, he precisely calculated how far away they were. To everyone’s surprise, he proved they had to lie beyond the Milky Way.
Since then, astronomers have raced to adapt to this new understanding of galaxies and superclusters, working to map the positions and distances of every galaxy they could detect. Hubble had focused on Andromeda, our closest major neighboring galaxy, but many more existed. By the 1970s, Stephen Gregory, Laird Thompson, and William Tifft proved that galaxies weren’t scattered randomly in space but clustered into Superclusters—massive filamentary or sheet-like structures separated by vast cosmic voids. They mapped the first Supercluster—the Coma Supercluster—which spans a region of space 100 million light-years across. An incredible 95% of galaxies are located in these structures. It wasn’t until 2014 that our own supercluster—the Laniakea Supercluster—was fully mapped. You might be surprised it happened in that order.
