Using Trees to Teach about Urban Ecosystems

The Trees for Tomorrow school program is a multi-week program developed by Keep Omaha Beautiful. Offered to K-12 public schools in Omaha, this program helps students understand the importance of urban trees, biodiversity, and a healthy urban ecosystem. Cross-curricular lessons emphasize science, social studies, and language arts. Curriculum includes: the benefits of a healthy urban tree canopy, the ecosystem services that trees provide, and the importance of biodiversity and environmental equity. This hands-on program culminates with students selecting and planting new trees on their school’s property. KOB works with each school to deliver a tailored version of the curriculum that meets the specific goals of the teacher and the needs of the students. This session will describe the development of the program and key lessons learned, including: how to tailor the curriculum, coordinate planting logistics with administrators, and tips for obtaining program funding. Participants in this session will walk away with recommendations for developing a successful, hands-on environmental education program.

Hannah’s current work at KOB (Keep Omaha Beautiful) blends her past experiences in both formal and informal educational settings. She has been working in classrooms, state parks, and nonprofit organizations for almost 25 years, encouraging everyone around her to be lifelong learners. Hannah has a strong passion for educating both youth and adults about the environment and building community through authentically-meaningful, interactive educational experiences.
