Old school machinist like me,made mine 40+ years ago. Make it out of thinner material 1/4" will be perfect 👍 Chuck spider stop is the name of it.

If you stand to the right of your grinder and adjust the guard a bit, you won't have sparks flying at you. I normally don't use the guard, but that's my preference.

Ive done similar at work .made a few bungs that fit in the number 5 morse taper mandrel to assist me but this is still a good idea .its just always better if you can aviod reducing your jaw gripping area .

you can also make this stop tool into spindle inside taper behind chuck for longer shafts
