Notifying the bank is an excellent idea.
I've always done this, in additon to cash.
This way there were fewer charges upon return.

I always notify my banks before I travel. A lot of times I found that Bolt and Uber go through different countries when they charge you. I found it best to notify them of where those transactions go through which countries. I have had problems in the past and that’s why I do that.

@davesaunders7080

Scotiabank and BMO don't need advance calls ,but till they told me not to I did call. In Germany now and had no probs.

@judithcrone5869

I email my banks and let them know. The advice I have been given is that I put my card at a bank atm and check only my balance at each new place. They then know where I am just in case has been cloned and used when elsewhere, so will put a hold on card till I can verify purchases.

@Bohemiahotrodandcustom

Whenever I travel overseas I always buy a specialty travel card where I can put $5000 on it, it's a separate account so I don't use my main account.
I also carry about $ 500- 1000 in cash in small denominations. I've never had a problem with it.

@dkod19

A few years ago, I put in a travel notification for my debit cards, and one of them STILL got declined. Now, two of my three banks have stopped accepting travel notifications. They say the spread of contactless chips has lessened the risk of fraud. I'm going on another trip tomorrow, so we'll see how next week goes.

@yaowsers77

I do call my bank. My credit card company said I don't need to call them though.

@lindab5789

If you share credit card accounts with your travel partner, do not carry the same set of credit cards. If you do, and you or your partner loses their cards, all the cards on the account will probably have to be canceled.

@well-blazeredman6187

I'll call my bank if I'm planning on using my debit card, to get cash, and the destination has a bad reputation for ATM fraud. The norm is for me put my spending on a credit card. I travel with a debit and two credit cards, carried separately.

@amby2show

I do it for every trip because one card will decline when I'm at a concert, thinking it's fraud

@petek5523

I used to call my bank, but now they say it’s not necessary.

@wncjan

My bank app allows me to open my card for the part of the world I'm travelling to.
