Advice for my younger self/anyone struggling with school:

1. the school that accepts or rejects your application does not determine your worth or future success

2. academic success isnโ€™t the end all be all - relax and enjoy life a bit more

3. after you enter the workforce, alma mater doesnโ€™t really matter.

What advice would you give for struggling students?

@WendyandBradPitt

I tried to tell high school students this same message. All that matters is that you have that piece of paper with the area of study that they are looking for. I have an Associates from a community college and a Bachelor's from a state school. It doesn't matter where I went.

My boyfriend works for an auto parts store as a Commercial Sales Manager and he makes more than me because of his experience. He doesn't have a degree.

@kvv90

I have a masters and was a social worker for a non profit until I became a sahm, husband only has a bachelor's but is a software developer making 4x my old salary. It's not about your degrees, it's your field and what you jobs you can get.

@seriousspinner

This is so true! Im currently working in a position that requires an MSc but was able to get in with previous work experience and a BSc. But it really depends on the industry/ company/ hiring manager. Some places value experience and work ethic over education and I guess im lucky in that sense

@avantasiapwnzall

Same ๐Ÿ˜‚ also a pharmacist and did 2 years of residency. Husband makes way more than me. He has a master's degree but it's not applicable/used at all for his job. I've learned that "better schools" or "higher education" doesn't necessarily translate to better pay. It's about what kind of services or goods you can provide that people will pay for.

@unounobi

i know some culture (experienced it myself) that judging ppl based on the brand school/uni ! if u go to unknown uni (not listed as top uni) they will consider u as loser n some ppl wont even try to minggle with u bc they think u are not worth! its a sad thing bc i do think what u learn is the important part not the brand name ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

@craigjenkins5434

Thank you! As a college student in Ontario that would like to go on to complete a number of years of university education, this is so helpful for being blessed stressed

@stargirl33343

I have a masters in neuro, and my husband has a BS in comp sci. I just got my first job with my MS, and my husband (4 years work experience to my 2.5) STILL makes double what they offered me.

Tldr: go into computer science or engineering if you don't know what to major in. Marketing is also a really good choice, if you are good at social media and not so good at math.

@ruveydagdurak

Needed to see this before uoftears finals ๐Ÿ˜‚

@fatimagarthia

I went to a shitty university and I got some cool jobs because of my interests and way of working. My husband went to a fancy university and got lots of connections, but crappy jobs (so far). Just do you!

@odevita

Also, saving money by going to community college isn't a bad thing! I changed my major a few times and took 5ish years (going on and off) to finish my associates degree. All that cost me the equivalent of 2 years at a state university, I don't even want to know how much worse off I'd have been financially of I'd gone straight to university ๐Ÿ˜ณ

The classes are smaller and there are often a ton of resources at community college, so it was less overwhelming than classes with 100+ people. I ended up dropping out of my bachelor's program and am pursuing relevant certifications instead because I didn't like the atmosphere or cost, plus I make the same amount of money as my coworkers with bachelors degrees because I have relevant work experience.

@messthetic7073

same with high schools! In my hometown my high school (and others) was seen as bad, and this one high school was seen as excellent and so many kids were pressured to go there. Many of them did gr 13 at diff schools and were amazed at the difference. the "elite" public school put too much pressure on most students.

@peaches__

U of Tears made me psycho , much happier at TMU :)

@Smurtypants

Lmao did we go to the same pharmacy school ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜‚

@amaripeart5417

For me it was the opposite. I went to GBC because of their reputation as โ€œthe bestโ€ and regret nothing because I wouldnโ€™t have the job I have now because without it I wouldnโ€™t have gotten their time of day.

@hotfunbread

I am so stressed because i have a general science degree not an honours with a 3.0 and i dont even know where to apply i was going to do opt or med but its clearly just not happening so now i am back trying to get my honours degree but its so difficult and i am trying to build my businesses idk man
