@JenniferGlatzhofer

I don't think anything will prepare me for the next song... but while you wait, please pre-save my new song coming out on 21st February!! Moment With You - https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/jenniferglatzhofer/moment-with-you

@jonathangaming7510

It's worth noting that in the canon animatic that when Athena says "very well" to Odysseus she turns her head revealing a giant scar in her eye from God Games

@TheSilversepiroth

So fun fact: at the end when you hear Warrior of the Mind, the guitar is playing the Penelope motif, confirming your suspicions that Odysseus wants to retire from trying to change the world and leaving it to Athena & others to do so

@salty_maple_syrup

15:01 Jay actually made a breakdown of this song and that ending specifically - there are two instruments playing in that moment, a low guitar and a piano. The piano is playing the melody of "Warrior of the Mind", which is also the same melody as "This is My Goodbye"; meanwhile, the guitar is playing a much simpler melody - "Penelope", showing that just as Ody and Athena started with two different melodies in Warrior of the Mind and synchronized during the second chorus, now their melodies and their paths in life diverge once more, now for the final time.

@gabeduran2871

Going super analysis to resist the urge to cry is very real and funny to see. Its like telling yourself "Lock in lock in lock in" in your head

@drayiskewl

😼 that's my video!

@joshuacamp7974

I know it seemed a little jarring for you going from monstrous Odysseus to sweet father Odysseus, but as a father I completely connected to this change from monster protector willing to unleash any cruelty to defend my family, to a loving kind father. Although I have not, and hope to never have to do what Odysseus has done, this dramatic change speaks to me. I think a lot of dads will live in this duality, probably some moms as well.

@songsayswhat

It feels to me like Athena is apologizing as much as a goddess can. Kudos to Odysseus for not saying, "Now you figure this out?!!! You couldn't have done that, oh, SEVEN YEARS AGO?!!!"

@BGTitanAvatar

What I appreciate about this song is that when Athena suggests maybe empathy and open arms is how the world should be, Ody declines. Not because he doesn’t think the world should be that way but because he knows that he’s done too much. Maybe years down the line the world could be kinder but for him he’s tired and all he wants to do is see his wife.

I like that they don’t reserve his arc just because he reached his goal and suddenly he’s all for open arms.

@Hannah-B19

14:41 it might be a little hard to tell but a beautiful detail is when Athena turns to say “very well” you see the whole right side of her face covered in lichtenberg figures which are scars from the lightning with her fight against ZeusđŸ„ș You also see those same scars on Ody’s hand/arm just before that which is a little detail I love that some animators do that shows that although he didn’t die he was hurt during Thunder Bringer physically as well as emotionally from having been forced by Zeus choose his crews death

@miclash013

I love how amazing Epic is at showing a negative character arc. One of the only ones I've seen executed well, honestly. Odysseus believes a lie (we must be ruthless) and throughout his journey his enemies and friends either challenge or reinforce his belief. And his pivotal character moment in "Monster" is choosing to keep his lie because everything in his life currently requires him to be ruthless. "Get in the Water" is the final straw, when he begs Poseidon to forgive him (way more sincerely than in "Ruthlessness") and Poseidon rejects him, finally showing Odysseus there truly is no other way and removing all doubts from his mind. And in the end, while he did achieve his goal, you can still hear and see the heartbreak he has, knowing he's done terrible things because of awful situations where at least one side had to lose.

That's another thing I love, and most people don't seem to understand; Odysseus still loved his crew, and still tried everything to bring them home. In the Cyclops' cave, he fought hard to save everyone. He tried to save his crew from Poseidon, and again with Circe. With Charybdis, he knew that either his entire crew would die, or only some would die as sacrifices. Even at the end, in "Thunderbringer," he still didn't want to kill his crew. Even after them backstabbing him completely in "Mutiny." And while many animations paint the crew as angry that Odysseus chose this option, in the music (especially with Eurylocus' dialogue) they were already resigned to dying. Eurylocus recognized that Odysseus only really had one option, and that was to sacrifice EVERYONE to make it home.

EPIC is a masterpiece in storytelling and music direction. I genuinely would place it as my second favorite piece of modern fiction, with how much talent and love was put into it.

@0.Artemis_devotee.0

Omg I can see the tears in WYFILWMA 😭😭😭😭

@yantayasmith4714

So I see a lot of people saying that that the Warrior of The Mind motif as she’s leaving which yeah but does anyone else hear “This is my goodbye”

@doc9473

At 10:51, you can hear the "Open Arms" motif, in case you handn't noticed!
We also faintly hear Telemachus towards the end of "Keep Your Friends Close" singing along with Penelope saying "keep your eyes open," so we do technically hear them in the same song earlier

@tyj2001

I love how with a majority of the animatics for this song have Athena only shown from one side til the "very well" revealing her scar from God Games.

@The_dandy_zombie

I really adore this song as the statement of the lesson you’re supposed to take from this. Ruthlessness vs open arms, that’s been the two moral principles fighting in this story.

I really enjoy Ody turning Athena down because he doesn’t live in a world that allows for Open Arms. His world is ruthless and he has to match it in order to keep what’s his safe. That’s his lesson.

But you watching don’t live in Ancient Greece. Us, like Athena, can live in a world where we hold each other with empathy. We can have open arms, we don’t have to be ruthless.

@angelartamesia2

I want to think that at the end of each lyric, both Telemachus's and Odysseus's voices are quivering and wavering at the end. So when Ody sings Oh my son look at how you've grown~~ his voice is quivering a lot TT It's all very emotional T-T

@RayGainbows

Im shocked. This song made me cry like a b$%^& 😭 It still chokes me up if im really listening to it. And forget about singing it in the car. Ive listened to this song idk how many times. But i listen to music about 8hrs a day and its #5 in my top tracks for the past 6 months, and it still chokes me up. youre strong dude.

@randomdrawerwriter1094

A little detail you might not have noticed, it’s a little less prominent in this animatic but when Athena finally turns her head to face Odysseus, half of her face seems scarred up, this showing that Zeus’s attack did affect her

@songbook6279

Those last few notes from Athena are ‘This is my goodbye’ T-T
