I enjoyed your reaction to Angelina. Toby Gad is a multi Grammy award winning songwriter and producer. He has produced award-winning hits for many of the biggest superstars in the music industry, including names like Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, Demi Lovato, Beyoncé, and more. He has recently produced an album of his top songs called Piano Diaries. As co-writer, he invited Angelina to perform If I Were a Boy with him at piano, and with cello. It was also released with a music video, but many prefer the piano version. The song was originally made famous by Beyoncé in 2008, and has received over 600 million views. Most believe Angelina's version is much more intimate and emotional, and she has reimagined it rather than covered it. Toby and Angelina also have been working on some original music, the first of which is a pre-release that is online currently. Bad Valentine is a jazzy, soulful, and powerful song that is perfectly suited for Angelina's voice. I think it has great potential to be the launching pad for the next phase of Angelina's career. This is the studio version because it doesn't have the church resonance of the live version. Still, her use of her low register allows her to sing like a boy, and then transition to her feminine high register, complements the story of the song beautifully. Like I often feel about Angelina Jordan's covers, I feel like I am finally hearing and understanding the song for the first time.

I'm glad that Toby hired her to sing this song of his for his Piano Diary's album! Now they are collaborating on new music and have several coming, the first is Bad Valentine, to be released Friday night after her LA concert! This audio track was recorded in a studio with violins added, then this video was filmed in the church for Toby Gad's new album, "Piano Diaries," which is a compilation of his big hits that he has co-written in the past. He asked Angelina to re-imagine If I Were A Boy, which he co-wrote with BC Jean & was made famous by Beyonce. They also recorded a live version in this church where she sings the first quarter of the song acapella, then is joined by piano & cello with the natural reverb of the church. It's AMAZING! A cover only in the sense that what Beyoncé made was a cover of the song written by BC Jean and Toby Gad, originally performed by Jean in 2008. Beyoncé's cover was that same year. In this video the pianist is Toby Gad .. yes the same co-writer of the song .. the Piano Diaries are a celebration of his hit songs. He invited Angelina to England with him to perform .. this is the seventh version I have heard. I am not sure if it is really a cover when a singer is standing next to the composer as they jam to create a different version of the song.
