@ChloeBanderas

As a VFX artist and supervisor I can confirm, that what you say is true. The ony factor in compression is the perspective, that is created by the distance to the subject. If you take a widangle shot from the same distance as your portrait, how could there be parallax (movement between foreground and background) if you didn't change your position, right?

If you move towards something, the things farther away get smaller at a slower rate as the things closer to you, so the background objects look smaller on an image in comparison to the foreground object, than if you're further away.

@TheAnthonyLJ

Recording to an external device and LOG are by far my favorite new features. It’s incredible to think that someone can buy one of these phones and tackle multimedia projects, from start to finish.

@schmitzoide

This is definitely the only video videographers and photographers need to watch. Record direct to USB devices is the most game-changing feature, because it means to save $500+ on an iPhone with larger storage. Suddenly you have a log-capable camera for a little over $1000 which is also your phone. And also, as an iOS developer, I can say that iOS 17 brings a TON of new features when it comes to connecting the phone / iPad (which already has USB-C) to photo / video equipment. It's clear Apple has shifted from trying to sell you the most expensive phone just for the sake of it, and moving towards really Pro features. Great video Tyler.

@soulintransit1675

Been following you for a while with another of my accounts, your chill energy is unique and your observations devoid of unnecessary drama. It's relaxing and informative, that's rare in our culture now. Keep being you and more influence to you.

@ivanwho6

The only review I actually look forward to every year!

@joneclegg

Best review I've seen of the camera system so far. I'm really impressed by the video footage you were able to get out of this tiny little device. I know every year it seems like Apple is promising that something that fits in your pocket can shoot films with, and everyone laughs and rolls their eyes, but every year they get a little bit closer, and I think this year was a big step.

@DrDoinks

Wow! The action mode footage you got from 5x zoom on the statue….

Can’t believe with that amount of shakiness and zoom you got such smooth motion…. Always wanted stabilize in post but never spent the time to learn.

That’s a hidden game changer feature for me, I love zoom and motion when recording in an iPhone

@jaykparikh37

That log footage was absolutely amazing, was not expecting that

@EstebanRestrepo0

The log footage looks great. I can’t believe it came from an iPhone.

@stefceretti

To answer you question about focal length ( I am a vfx supervisor ) you are absolutely correct (+/- lens distortions happening on wide lenses close to subjects that add even more to the effect). But yes it’s correct. A zoom is technically a crop, the face changing is because if you compensate the crop by changing your distance to the subject then it’s a perspective change. That’s what happens in a vertigo shot basically.

@navixaxa5023

Buddy gave us a movie straight outta Hollywood.

That Intro was fire 🔥🔥

Almost forgot for a minute I'm watching a Phone review.

@JoshHarrow

Every year I look forward to your review of the new iPhones and this year is no exception. Thank you once again for making a detailed, well-rounded review of the new phones and for staying consistent throughout the years. It makes it even more impressive to see these sometimes iterative feeling upgrades year over year amount to quite impressive improvements when switching from a two or three year old iPhone. Coming from a 13 Pro the wow-feature for me this year was your example of the action mode shots. Don't know that I will use them very often but quite impressive and nice to have with all the other improvements that impact daily use more.

@howinspiece

You did a great job showing off the camera quality of the iPhone 15, I'm bought in

@peterfang51

As usual, the best iPhone camera system review from a photographer's point of view out there!

@Americanomondays

Dang man. This was great. So cool you were at the Capture One studio. As a commercial photographer who tethers with Capture One onset that’s one of the things in mind when they show that in the Keynote. Beautifully made video man.

And yes, the LOG footage is crazy. I picked up the 15 promax yesterday, and was testing it out on my children and threw it into Resolve last night, and was impressed at how good it looked.

@98JamesNixon

As a videographer that log footage actually looks amazing, I usually never use phone footage mixed with my videos but could see myself using this for some quick b-roll

@teddyf3960

1:28 all I needed to know was that the 15 can capture ghosts. You sold me!

@zona_davani

This is the best review I’ve seen on the iPhone 15. Your video is informative and stunning. I’m due for my iPhone upgrade. As a budding content creator as my side hustle I think this is gonna help me a lot.

@utubekullanicisi

10:09 What the VP of camera software engineering at Apple stated about the 1.2x and 1.5x modes:
"What we did here is we actually built dedicated neural networks so that when you’re at those focal lengths… we bring in in a kind of very kind of thoughtful and specific way, the pixels from the 48 megapixels to basically do a detail transfer”
So, in fairness, cropping into the main camera isn't all they're doing, they're doing some kind of retraining in their neural networks and still combining data from the cropped image and the full non-binned 48MP of the sensor, and somehow, despite the fact that the cropped image is neither 12MP nor 48MP at that point, they're outputting a 24MP image, and as far as I understand it's not just a simple up or downscaling. I wish they told us more about the exact image pipeline for what they're doing with 1.2x and 1.5x that they're not doing with all the other zoom ranges, and for the 24MP capture, but it's not just a digitally zoomed in image.

@OmarZ77

10:40 yes, I researched the subject of compression extensively two years ago, and yes, it is absolutely totally dependent on the distance between the subject and the camera, not the focal length.

You can actually test that. Take a portrait using a 75mm lens, then take the same photo using a 24mm lens and crop into the subject. The compression will be exactly the same.
